    The steps as provided are wrong. You should:
    1) Gather tools, make sure you can be safe from traffic.
    2) Loosen the nuts while the car and tire are still on the ground.
    3)THEN jack up the car, and remove the nuts (check the jack stowage area for a sticker noting where your safe jacking points are.)
    4) Mount the spare. Finger tight the lug nuts,
    5) Lower the car down and then tighten the lug nuts with the wrench. (Ideally, criss-crossing between nuts so as to distribute stud tension properly. e.g. a four bolt rim goes 1-3-2-4, a five bolt rim goes 1-4-2-5-3)

    If you jack up the car first and then try to remove the lug nuts, you will find it difficult or impossible, as the torque of your wrench goes into rotating the whole wheel assembly and not just the nut. Leaving the car on the ground holds the wheel still while you work. Likewise, you can’t properly tighten the nuts when mounting the spare if the wheel is still in the air.
